To provide care effectively and safely we will need to hold sensitive information about you and your family. In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations 2018 (GDPR) we are required to inform you how we will process your data and what your rights are in relation to this data. We are registered as data controllers with the ICO. The data we hold relates to your maternity care and we are required to hold this data for a period of 25 years.
Occasionally, either to enable multidisciplinary working, to keep you and your baby safe or to provide our professional body the Nursing and Midwifery Council with information, we will be required to share information about you and your family with the relevant parties. We will ask consent from you whenever possible and only share information on a ‘need to know’ basis.
Sometimes we wish to share your anonymized information for the purpose of audits or research regarding independent midwifery and our way of working. We will ask for consent separately in that case.
You can request access to your data at any time by contacting

Your data is kept safe either on password protected devices, encrypted memory sticks or in a fire proof filing cabinet. After 25 years, when we are not required to hold your data anymore we will ensure it is kept safely for historical purposes or destroyed.
You can request amendments/deletions to the dataset we hold about you, however, due to the legal requirements regarding record keeping in healthcare, they may or may not be possible and we will consider each request on a case by case basis.
If you are not happy with how we manage your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioners Office (www.ico.org.uk)
