Welcome to Yorkshire Storks
We are a growing team of midwives and birth activists offering support and care throughout the childbirth year. Some care can be face to face at your home, or virtual if that makes more sense. We provide family centred, evidence-based care and information about pregnancy, birth and parenting.
Independent Midwives provide woman-centred continuity of care that respects the whole family and is based on evidence – where it exists and an acknowledgement of when it does not. This is a model of care that is difficult for employed midwives to use, due to policies and a culture that does not prioritise women’s individual needs.
Our basic beliefs
All Yorkshire Storks midwives believe that giving birth is part of a continuum, a life event and that supportive, enabling midwifery helps keep everything normal for women and babies. We believe that respectful care and birth at home improves the outcomes for most women but back up help and intervention in hospital is sometimes necessary and at times most sensible. We are of course happy to support those who feel that hospital birth is best for them and their family.
We have a lot of experience of working with families from a diverse range of backgrounds. We celebrate and respect all families.
How we work
Technology advances means many aspects of care can be provided remotely, but this is
much better when we know you and you know us. This will enable us to reach more
pregnant people and their families.
Continuity of carer with a small group of midwives is known to improve outcomes and health for mum and babe. We suspect it does for
partners too but that’s an area of research yet to be undertaken.
You can use us to “top up” your NHS care, or to explore all your options. You can just take a hypnobirthing course or, depending on your locality and our indemnity insurance situation, use us for your exclusive maternity and childbirth care.
We offer midwifery support from the minute you know you are pregnant to at least six weeks after the birth of your baby. See our range of packages/services for more.
Flexible and unhurried interactions
We can plan your visits or zoom meetings around your work or family commitments at times to suit you and your partner. We can chat over a cuppa and our visits are unhurried, relaxed and friendly, enabling us to get to know each other and explore what is important to you. Occasionally we may need to reschedule a visit when we are attending another client who is birthing or in unexpected need of us. This flexibility means we can be similarly responsive to your needs.
Teamwork and collaborative care
When you book with us for full care, currently antenatal and postnatal care, we can offer you 10% off our additional services which include: antenatal birth preparation and hypnobirthing courses, antenatal infant feeding preparation sessions, baby wearing demonstrations or a consultation with our expert witness midwife if you have any concerns regarding previous maternity care or birth. Where more than one of us is involved in your care, we can, with your permission, share information about you with each other – this saves you from having to repeat yourself and enables us to work collaboratively. We can also ask others for help if you think it would be useful to you.
Arrange a consultation
Contact us to arrange a ‘no obligation’ consultation for a small fee to discuss the services we offer in more detail and to discover who is the best placed to lead on your care.
Student Midwives
Do you want to find out if midwifery is for you or gain experience for study applications? We also occasionally run Study Days of interest to midwives and other birth workers. **please make this a separate page**
